The Effect of Domestic Violence on Children
Domestic violence on Infants- Low infant birth weight results from maternal stress from the mother. The range from 2 weeks to 17 years. The most common injury for a child abused victim is a direct hit because children are so vulnerable and helpless to abuse from their care takers. Children are extremely vulnerable to maltreatment including shaken baby syndrome. Some children end up on social welfare when in these families dealing with domestic violence. Studies often show children dealing with or that has been exposed to domestic violence are more likely to experience a wide range variety of difficulties. Children who have experienced domestic violence are also more than likely going to offend again in the future. Children in families experiencing domestic violence are more likely than other children to experience difficulties in school and lower scores on assessments through cognitive and attitudinal problems. Researchers have found that these children often suffer low self-esteem problem through dealing with behavioral, social, and emotional problems. Males who experience domestic violence as children are more than likely going to commit violence as adults against their future families than women. The effects of domestic violence affect the children’s lives in the present and in the future which leads to be the common cause in most long term problems resulting from domestic violence as a child. There are higher levels of adult depression and other trauma symptoms in children that were abused and affected by domestic violence in the family. Exposure to domestic violence is one of the most leading causes to death in the United States. |
